Interesting post! Agree with some, enlightened by others and have different thoughts about a few. 4 and 10 do not resonate with me. Social media is all about the conversation, engagement, community. And I find our thinking has become less homogenous ( in some areas). Read We Are All Weird by Godin to get an interesting perspective on this and why marketing doesn't work the way it used to.

Watch an interview with Jin Liqun, the Chairman of China's Sovereign Wealth Fund. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg1MOAITI9s&feature=feedu. It is worth noting how the tables have turned and now China is expected to rescue Europe.

Dean, I recall seeing a study about job creation by small businesses that suggested it is the companies 13 years old or older that create the most jobs. Does that ring a bell with you? I wonder how this fits with the Stage 2 companies study?

I have been an economic development practitioner/problem solver for the last 20 years. While I appreciate positive thinking, how do we differentiate between boosterism and "happy talk"? The latter simply prolongs situations and policies that demand changing.

Interesting article. Thank you. Small business is important to the economy for a variety of reasons, including job generation. It appears that the job creation role of small business is changing. Did you see this NBER article, it says when we look closer at the data through statistical tests we find small business is not generating the jobs we observed as more general observational levels: http://www.nber.org/papers/w16300. And then there is this new Kauffman Fdtn. study that says new startups are now creating fewer jobs: http://www.kauffman.org/research-and-policy/starting-smaller-staying-smaller-americas-slow-leak-in-job-creation.aspx

5% of Americans control 65% of American financial and economic assets. According to Jeffrey Thompson at the U. Mass. at Amherst, the rich get richer at the expense of middle class and the poor. Is economic development still committed to the old trickle-down theory of economics, or has it moved on to a more realistic economic theory for creating broad-based economic prosperity for these dire economic times?
