Every September my husband and I take a few weeks to travel out West. We’ve extensively traveled the country, but we keep coming back to the one state we love most: Wyoming, and in particular, the town of Jackson and the greater Jackson Hole valley area. Not only does the area boast jaw-dropping mountain views of Grand Teton National Park, but it’s also home to the iconic Jackson Town Square, the National Elk Refuge, and some of the best skiing, fishing, and hiking in the Lower 48. For anyone into outdoor recreation, it is the perfect place to visit. If you ever find yourself in the area, here are some of the best places to experience (in my humble opinion).

Best Brunch Spot: Persephone

With three locations throughout the valley, this French bakery, cafe, and coffee shop offers dishes made with high quality, seasonal ingredients. Their bakery items are made from scratch daily, so be sure to grab some bread or pastries to take on your adventures.

Best Dinner Spot: Gun Barrel Steak & Game House

This has become our go-to restaurant for dinners out. They are known for their beef, bison, and elk entrees; however, my two favorite things on the menu are their french onion soup and deep dish apple pie.

Best Treat: Huckleberry Shake

There is an abundance of huckleberry items around the area, but you must try the huckleberry shake from Jackson Drug. Walk across the street to Jackson Town Square to enjoy it while listening to music from local buskers.

Best Wildlife Viewing: Moose-Wilson Road

Believe it or not, I have seen more wildlife driving Moose-Wilson Road than I have anywhere in Grand Teton National Park. Bear, moose, fox, elk, and deer sightings are regular occurrences on this stretch of road just south of the park. Parts of the road close often for seasonal construction and maintenance, so be sure to check for closures if you plan on taking this way into the park.

Best Scenic Spot: String Lake

Jenny Lake gets all the glory, but I find String Lake, nestled between Jenny Lake and Leigh Lake, to be even more beautiful. This narrow, shallow lake has crystal clear water that is phenomenal for swimming and kayaking. There is an easy 3.7 mile loop hike along its shore that has breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Best Time to Visit: Late Summer/Early Fall

This of course depends on your interests, but I love to see the trees changing color, the warm days and cool nights, and active wildlife. Grand Teton National Park is less crowded since most schools are in session, yet it’s before the busy ski season starts.

If you are looking for your next vacation spot, put Jackson, Wyoming at the top of your list!
